People order the food from Angel Food Ministries weeks in advance at wholesale prices.
Volunteers at places like North Highland Baptist Church in Hueytown get up very early to distribute the goods.
"The food comes in bulk in comes here early in the morning about five and so we come and separate it into the bags they ordered," said Kevin Long. "It's rewarding to come here and participate in something that I know helps people. You can tell when you look at them that they are appreciative."
The program is open to anyone who wants to save money on groceries and it's growing fast. More than forty churches in the Greater Birmingham Area now participate in Angel Food Ministries.
"It's a nonprofit organization that started in Monroe, Georgia in 1994. It was started by a couple who were just trying to help their neighbors who had been laid-off when a plant was shut down and it has now spread to over 35 states and over 500,000 people that they're helping every month," said Gina Pennington.
"It's growing by probably twenty families a month I would imagine that would probably continue for a while," said Kevin Long. "They're buying in bulk and so it saves people a lot of money. They can order over the internet or by order on a form so there's a wide variety."
“They'll have spaghetti sauce and pasta and the ground beef and they do it so that when you do the menu you can make a meal out of whatever you have,” said Gina Pennington.
