BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- Meal time for Ryder Turner is a special time for his mother, Michelle.
"It's such a special bond; a special bond between a mom and baby that no one else will have," Michelle Turner said.
Turner uses a breast pump to keep up with Ryder's appetite and her busy work schedule.
A recent report from the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns mothers to take extra precautions when using secondhand pumps and accessories.
"You should not share or buy off Craigslist or the Internet," Lactation consultant Nancy Imperiale said.
She says potentially infectious particles could linger in a single-use breast pump.
"There is potential for breast milk to back into the motor, and certain viruses and bacteria can be transmitted to your baby," Imperiale said.
In addition to breast pumps, many parents also rely on used car seats, cribs and strollers. Parents should make sure the product has not been recalled, it has no missing parts and has never been in a crash before deciding to make a purchase.
For cribs, new rules took effect in 2011, and any models made before that year may be obsolete.
Used playpens should be avoided if they were made before 2000. The playpens should be carefully observed to make sure there are no mesh tears. The holes in the mesh should be smaller than a quarter of an inch.
Hand-me-down high chairs are fine, as long as the chair has a five-point safety strap.
As a good rule of thumb, though, it is best to check the recall list before making any purchases of used items for babies.
Recall information can be found here: http://www.recalls.gov.
