Here are ten unique ways you can recycle coffee and used coffee grounds.
1. Keep the kitchen drain smelling fresh.
How it works: Pour about half a cup of used coffee grounds down the sink drain immediately followed by about five cups of boiling water. The hot water will push the grounds through the drain without risk of clogging. This should remedy your drains from bad odor for at least a week.
2. Dye
How it works: Used coffee grounds can serve as a great brown dye on anything from fabric to paper and even Easter eggs. Simply take used coffee grounds and band them together in a filter or nylon. Soak the grounds in two cups of hot water for five to ten minutes. Once that time is up your dye is ready!
3. Cleaner
How it works: The grounds are extremely abrasive and acidic giving them the edge when it comes to cleaning those hard to remove stains from hard surfaces. Simply mix the coffee grounds with a little bit of water and then scrub with a firm brush. Just remember this only works on stain resistant surfaces because as mentioned before: coffee is also a great dye.
4. Cat/Pest Repellant
How it works: Simply mix coffee grounds with used orange peels and spread the mixture around the outside of your garden. The cats will be turned off by the citrus and coffee smells. The coffee smell will also to deter ants wanting in your garden.
5. Fetilizer
How it works: Coffee grounds can be used to enance the growth of radishes and carrots above all else. Before you plant, simply mix the grounds with your seeds. Then plant them all together. Not only will the grounds increase your carrot and radish sizes and amount, this will also protect your veggies from underground pests.
6. Deodorizer
How it Works: Coffe grounds attract and trap unwanted smells without releasing that unmistakable coffee aroma. Firs tdry used coffee grounds on a cookie sheet or foil. Place the grounds in old pantyhose. Tie off the hose then place them in closets or drawers where you want to get rid of those awful smells.
7. Give your hair a boost!
How it works: On a cosmetic level, coffee grounds can enhance the color of brown or black hair whil also giving it some extra shine. Now read carefully because if you don't, the results might be bad. When you're in the shower and have shampood your hair, grab some used coffee grounds and rub them throughout your hair. Rinse and then condition to help rid your hair of the coffee smell. REMBER: DO NOT USE ON LIGHT COLORED HAIR!
8. Dust Inhibitor
How it work: This is a simple trick to help when cleaning your fireplace. Cleaning a fireplace can be troublesome with all the ash and soot that fill the air. Pour wet, used coffee grounds over the ash and soot. The grounds will start to soak up the dust in a matter of moments, leaving a much easier substance to sweep up.
9. Grow Your Own Mushrooms
How it works: First you need a glass jar or bucket. Then you will need to obtain inoculated mushroom plugs which are available for purchase from many places including companies such as Fungi perfecti, llc. After enjoying a cup, or three, of coffee place the wet grounds in your jar or bucket, then puch in the mushroom plugs. Be sure to keep the ground wet and within a matter of days you should begin to see some mushroom growth.
10. Cooking
How it works: This will need fresh coffee grounds or leftover coffee for this one. Rather than throwing out the leftover coffee at the bottom of the pot (if there ever is any)... use it as a meat tenderizer. Soak your steak in it to make the meat more tender and add a new flavor at the same time. You can also add fresh grounds to cookies, brownies, and chocolate cakes for a richer taste.
