NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Council is set to decide the fate of a several buildings in Queens recognized for their graffiti art.
The owner of the brick warehouses known as 5Pointz wants to demolish them to make room for two apartment towers.
The council is hearing the case Wednesday.
5Pointz has oversized graffiti on the exterior, and has drawn international artists.
The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/19yg2bc ) says the Walkoff family last week put aside additional space for affordable housing and artists' studios in an effort to win approval for the $400 million project in Long Island City.
If approved, the owner says artists would be allowed to paint several walls.
A graffiti artist, who curated the buildings' every-changing art, says the project will destroy what makes New York unique.
