Well, spring break is just about over for a lot of you, and there may be some heavy partying to conclude the last couple of days, perhaps some drinking…a lot of drinking. However, that type of activity comes with a price to pay.
The beaches are crowded, the sun is out, and the alcohol is flowing. It must be spring break. It’s a time where millions get away from the 9 to 5 to break open the bottles, but the next morning may not be such a thrill.
"Typically, the problem people run into with excessive alcohol intake or binge drinking is that they don't realize that they're quickly going to become dehydrated. Alcohol has this property that works on your brain, causing you to urinate a lot more than you normally would," says Dr. Amy Illescas with American Family Care.
Not only does drinking heavily cause a person to lose the fluids they're bringing in through the alcohol, but they also lose other fluids already in the body. As a result, the person may feel nauseated and dizzy the following day…commonly known as a hangover.
So, what's the secret behind the cure?
"If you're going to drink alcohol, for every drink that you drink, you're probably going to need about 8 ounces of water with it as well," adds Dr. Illescas.
Also, take nausea medication as needed. As far as taking another drink to cure a hangover, Dr. Illescas says the old saying "you need the hair of the dog that bit you", doesn't apply here. Drinking more alcohol will add to further dehydration, taking up room in the stomach that could have been left vacant for orange juice or water.
