Come next week, the Magic City transforms into the Emerald City of Oz. The all-time favorite stage production of The Wizard of Oz comes to the BJCC, but what's even more exciting is the production will have a wonderful local tie! A dozen local children will perform in the play.
Follow the yellow brick road to the BJCC. There, you'll find little ones performing for the national tour of The Wizard of Oz; but their hometown isn't Emerald City...try Tuscaloosa.
"We talked about the audition process and we worked on the total just them selling themselves as performers," says Joey Lay.
He is the president of the Actor's Charitable Theatre Company in Tuscaloosa where he's prepared the young thespians for their parts as the famous munchkins in the Broadway Across America production. Since nailing the auditions, they've spent hours getting into character.
With every move, precision is a must, down to every single step. Dance teacher Alisha Powell says she can teach her own choreography with her eyes close, but teaching someone else's is a different story.
"You’re so scared, you know. What if I didn't teach it the way it's suppose to be or what if I tell somebody to go left and they're suppose to go right. So, it's been strenuous for all of us," says Powell.
Everyone is eagerly anticipating something special about taking center stage.
The play runs from March 9-14th at the BJCC Concert Hall.
