BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) Childhood obesity has become an epidimic here in Alabama and across the nation. Addressing weight issues with children can be a touchy subject.

Parents know that eating healthy and exercise are great ways to keep weight under control, but how do you talk to your child about obesity?

Dr. Josh Klapow is on Wake Up Alabama every Thursday morning. He talked with Rick Jackson about some ways to address the issue.

Watch Wake Up Alabama every weekday morning from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.

I think that being healthy is important. But I think this country puts too much of a spotlight on child obesity. We always seem to be telling them that they are fat and how to fix that. But we are not telling them that their appearance isn't as important as their character. That them being kind, able to empathize, able to adjust to everyday dissapointments, and able to keep a good attitude even when things aren't going their way. I think we need to focus more on whats inside than their weight problem. Most of them have low enough self-esteem without us telling them how horrible it is to be overweight all the time.
