The teams report to Pelham on Wednesday, March 17 with a press conference planned to introduce the players and coaches for both teams planned for 6:30 p.m. that day at the Pelham Civic Complex.
Alabama holds a 10-9 edge in the boys series. The Alabama girls hold an 11-8 edge including three wins in a row heading into this year’s contest.
Smith joins the Alabama boys squad, selected by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association’s Basketball All-Star Committee, already strong at the guard position. He joins Ramsay teammate Ralph Floyd, the Rams point guard and MVP of the Final 48 Class 4A state tourney. Ramsay’s Kelly Cheatham joins Greene County’s Rodney Wesley as coaches for the Alabama boys squad.
Cheatham’s Rams went 24-8 and beat Brewbaker Tech in the finals to claim the Class 4A championship at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Wesley led Greene County’s Tigers to a 23-7 record and the Class 3A state championship – beating Madison Academy in the finals.
