AUBURN, Ala. (WIAT) - The prognosis for the Toomer's Oaks isn't good.  But it will be April or May before they know for sure.

Auburn Professor of Horticulture Dr. Gary Keever says the hope is that the trees will have a big flush of new growth.  If not, he says the trees will probably not live very long.  That's the reason Auburn is looking for a plan to keep the tradition of "Rolling Toomer's Corner" alive.

Debbie Shaw chaired the committee, Auburn's Committee to Determine the Future of Rolling Toomer's Corner, turned in their recommendation to Auburn President Jay Gogue last week.  That plan allows for the two original oaks to remain in place through the 2012 football season.  If they are dead they will be removed and at least one new large tree will be transplanted.  Shaw says the committee's plan also calls for a large temporary structure to put in place as well.  Auburn fans will be allowed to roll that until the new tree is established.

Keever says to plant the new trees, all of the soil around Toomer's Corner would have to be excavated because of spread of the poison used to kill the trees.
