Over the skies in North Birmingham, a chill in the air carries with it pollution. How much and how deadly is yet to be determined....but hope is high. "This double barrel good news...I think it's important." Former Federal Judge U.W. Clemons spoke with us about his hopes to meet with Birmingham City Council members in the next few days.
He has progressed with plans to possibly open a medical clinic for thousands of families in the North Birmingham area. Many of whom insist they are sick and dying from toxic contamination in the soil and air. The hope is that the recent Superfund declaration by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency will help.
"The designation of Superfund means that the cleanup will take place now if those responsible for it don't undertake responsibility, on their own, the government would do it. Bill them for having done the work."
Judge Clemon is spear heading a team to help residents digest these recent developments. he was hired at the request of Birmingham City Councilwoman Maxine Parker.... who says there is also high hope that more news will continue to flow in over the next few weeks and months ahead....news that will make a difference. I want to thank channel 42 for their documentary deadly deception, Sonya DiCarlo, Sherri Jackson, Ken Lass, who took to the streets of Collegeville, Fairmont and Harrimon Park and produced a documentary that made our job much easier as we talked about our case there in North Birmingham.
Lemon told us they are still in the development stage with the clinic which needs Birmingham city council approval. He also tells us that cooper green officials have said they are ready to go.....and they are willing to staff the clinic.
