MCDONALD CHAPEL, Ala. (WIAT)- It's been almost six months since a wave of deadly tornadoes swept across Alabama.  Since that time there have been many stories of triumph and perseverance.  Tuesday in McDonald Chapel another story emerged, as the community rallied together to make sure one woman would still have a place to call home.

Margie Knight is a staple in McDonald Chapel.  She's lived in the community for nine decades, raising her children on the same hill she still lives on.  On April 27th her house was destroyed by the tornadoes that mowed through the state of Alabama.  Her son Joe had to pull her from the rubble.  "I just thank the Lord that we heard about it and I'm thankful that my son was with me," she says.

With a house in ruins it looked as if Margie's tenure in McDonald Chapel could be coming to an end.  Then, the Volunteers for America stepped in.  They rallied the community and built Mrs. Knight a brand new house, completely mortgage free.  "[She's] a survivor in every sense of the word.  From tornadoes, to throat cancer, burying a husband, burying a son.  There's not a storm that can blow a Margie Knight away," says Rick Ousley with Volunteers of America.  "So, we decided there was nothing that was going to take us away from this project."

Now, Margie's front porch faces her Polly Hilton's house, her neighbor and best friend.  "She's going to get out on the front porch and I'm going to get out there on my front porch and work us up some kind of signal so we know what each other's doing," says Mrs. Hilton laughing.  Ousley thinks the new set-up could spell trouble.  "You know, you'd wonder if a 94 year old and a 90 year old could get in trouble and the answer to that is:  it's a definite possibility," he jokes.
