TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) - U.S. Housing and Urban Development presented over 16.6 million dollars in disaster relief funding to the city of Tuscaloosa.  The funding is being administered through the Community Development Block Grant Funding or CDBG's.  There will be some restrictions as to how the money can be used for disaster relief.  Mayor Walt Maddox says his primary goals for the money include building homes, infrastructure, and leveraging the dollars.  Maddox says the tornado wiped out the majority of the city's affordable housing market. Tuscaloosa was overbuilt at the time of the storm and renters have been able to find a temporary place to stay.  But Maddox is concerned that as the University of Alabama's enrollment grows and when FEMA benefits end in October of 2012 many of those people will be left without a place to go.  Maddox explains that 80% of the funding is required to go into the recovery areas, however, it is his hope and goal that all of the HUD funding will be used in those areas.  Maddox hopes to have a recommendation for the city council by mid-March on how to use the HUD grant funding.
