BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - There are anywhere from 1.6 million to 3.2 million concussions diagnosed each year in the U.S.
Several states including Alabama have instituted new laws to deal with concussion management in young people.
CBS 42 partnered with Children's of Alabama to dedicate our news coverage on Wednesday to concussion awareness.
It wasn't just a regular day in the newsroom; November 16th was concussion awareness day at CBS 42.
The day began with Sherri Jackson as a special guest on JOX Roundtable for their “Doc on JOX” segment with Dr. Mark Ricketts.
In addition to several special reports about concussions, doctors and nurse practioners answered question, after question that viewers called in with during a 2 hour long phone bank.
“This is an issue that I think needs to be recognized and understood so that it can be properly managed in a state that plays so many sports I think it's an important topic,” says Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Jim Johnston.
“The more that we know, the more that we're educated about concussions then the more we're comfortable dealing with children who've suffered a concussion, the more we just understand about what's going on," says Haley Vance, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner of pediatric neurosurgery.
Bill payer, News Director at CBS 42 says the issue of concussion connects many people.
“There are really few issues that affect such a wide range of people as the whole concussion issue."
And he hopes that viewers get...
"Information that not only helps them lives their daily lives better but if they're unfortunate enough to have someone in their family with a concussion, information moving forward that they can use."
