TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) - Tuscaloosa City Councilman Kip Tyner has entered a guilty plea. Tyner was arrested last month for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Police report that while investigating a separate crime, they discovered Tyner and another man in an apartment where there was cocaine on a mirror. Although Tyner entered a guilty plea before the court, Tyner's attorney, David Andres, says that the plea will be set aside while Tyner enters a counseling program administered by the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney's Office. Andres says if Tyner can complete the "clean" program to the satisfaction of the court, the guilty plea will be set aside and the charges will be dropped from Tyner's record.
Tyner says it was not an easy decision to enter the plea and enroll in the program. However, he says he believes it is the best thing for his family and the community that he serves. Tyner says he plans to continue working and serving on the Tuscaloosa City Council; even while he is enrolled in the "clean" program. The length and type of counseling Tyner will undergo will be determined at an assessment later this week.
When questioned by media about his arrest, Tyner says he was not on drugs at the time of his arrest and he is not on drugs now.
