BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Hopes are high that a trip to New York will provide solutions for massive local debt.  Tuesday, two Jefferson County commissioners will fly to The Big Apple to meet with creditors and try to hammer out a deal on the sewer debt.

Commissioners David Carrington and Jimmie Stephens are making the trip.  The commission is working to reach a deal before the latest deadline which is September 16th.  The commission president says bankruptcy must remain an option.

The commission held off on announcing plans to file for bankruptcy two weeks ago after Governor Bentley promised help.  The governor says he's committed to calling a special session to work with lawmakers to find a solution.
