BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Alabama has made it's way to the top of a national list and it's not good news.

According to recent numbers released by The Food and Nutrition Service, Alabama is now the state with the greatest number of residents receiving food stamps.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or "SNAP,"  shows that in May of 2010, just over 808,000 people were collecting food stamps.  This year, that number jumped to over 1.7 million.  That's an increase of 118 percent.

Overall, one in five people in the US get food stamps.  The average household receives $284 a month.

This is the first year with a republican controlled stste Congress and Governor too...a true teabagger state headed in an un-American direction! None of the local Alabama tv or radio stations even mentioned this dubious honor!

What do you expect from a state that elects congressional representatives that won't even debate healthcare and financial reform. Shelby tried his dardest to make sure loan agencies could still charge the highest rates in the country too... and they all voted to put supreme court judges in that voted to throw out habeas corpus and give more rights to big corporations then we the PEOPLE IN THE CONSTITUTION! Roby voted for DEFAULT!
