Xmas Tree Recycling Underway to Help Fish Habitat

HOUSTON, Ala. (WIAT) - Most people threw out Christmas trees more than a month ago ... but those trees are still serving a purpose.

We caught up with Alabma Power at Smith Lake, in the Bankhead National Forest near Houston to see how aquatic habitat is being built throughout the state.

For almost twenty years, Alabama Power has taken old Christmas trees like these and put them to good use.  The company joins forces with the Forest Service and the Department of Conservation to make this recycling project happen.
15-hundred trees will be recycled which workers say not only benefits the enviroment but also fishermen.

The trees are bundled to weigh them down and dropped in GPS tracked sites ... fishermen can then go online to find the best fishing spots.

Workers say since the program started they have recycled 54 thousand trees.
