JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) -  Jasper City Council held a work session to talk to folks like Bill Blaizer about concerns with vicious or potentially viscious dogs ... Blaizer's wife was bitten by a pit bull in town and he wants the banned. However, the council has decided to drop a full-on ban of infamous breeds like pit bulls.

Mayor Sonny Posey says there are ways to detect whether or not a dog is, or could be, vicious. The city intends to train it's animal control officer to be able to make those calls. Although the mayor has changed his mind about specific breeds there are plenty of people in town still asking the city for the ban.  The council says it definitely wants to improve on the current vicious dog ordinance which requires someone to get bitten or injured *before* action can be taken.

I am support the Mayor on his decision not to Ban specific breeds. This has been proven time and time again not to work. People are the problem. Give a large fine and/or jail time to dog owners that have a dog that goes out and bites/attacks another person. A dog is only as good as the people that owe it. NO dog is inherently vicious! Who is going to be training your animal control people? Diane Pegram Dog Trainer
