"It's got the New York strip, ribeye, pork chop, sirloin, pork tenderloin, sausages, there's a variety in there," says Sagani.

ODENVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) - It's called the Smart Butcher.

Amir Sagani, manager at Lil Mart in Odenville, Al says he jumped at the chance to have the machine put in his store.

"The owners of this machine he came down here to me and asked if I want to try the machine here, it's a new concept, I said sure why not so he brought it out here to give it a try and see how it works out," says Sagani.

It's the first meat dispensing vending machine in Alabama.

The smart butcher has only been at the store for about 5 or 6 days and so far, customers love it. Terri Davis says the steaks were so good she came back for more.

"We thought it was interesting so we come down here last weekend twice and bought out of the machine and the steaks were like if you would have got them out of a restaurant," says Davis.

Sagani says they sell about 10 to 20 meats a day.

"It's got the New York strip, ribeye, pork chop, sirloin, pork tenderloin, sausages, there's a variety in there," says Sagani.

One of the biggest selling points is affordability.

"I just priced some steaks a while ago at the local grocery store and believe it or not this will probably be cheaper, cheaper than going to the grocery store," says Davis.

The machine accepts credit, debit or cash. All of the items are under $6.

I think NE's point is valid. In order to purchase guaranteed fresh meat you have to go to a butcher or supermarket that cuts and packages their meat there onsite (example: Winn Dixie). The meat in this machine likely comes from a vendor that obtains it already sprayed down with a checmical that is like what WalMart uses to extend the life of their ground beef and steaks to last 3 weeks to a month and this is raw treated meat. The color stays red so it is difficult to tell if the meat has spoiled. I would steer clear of this as well. Having at one time been hospitalized with a case of food poisoning, I can assure you that it is not a chance worth taking for a $6 item. Use your noggin people.

It's a temperature controlled unit - what's wrong with you? Seriously. Hot and cold foods purchased via vending machines is not a new concept. Seems like the general IQ in NE isn't all that high, because common sense would have prevented you from leaving that comment. Just, wow..

Maybe thats a good idea in Alabama but I can guarantee you that me coming from NE would never buy my meat out of a vending machine - something is wrong with that picture and I really hope no one gets food poisoning b/c you can only leave meat thawed & unfrozen for so long w/o cooking it before it goes bad.
