Van der Sloot trial postponed

Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)   More than a year and a half after a corpse was found in his Lima hotel room, Joran van der Sloot was in a courtroom in Peru this morning.  But it's just another case of waiting longer for justice for families on two continents.

A Peruvian judge has postponed Joran van der Sloot's murder trial to Jan. 11 after he asked for more time to decide how to plead.

He's standing trial for the admitted killing of 21 year old student Stephany Flores.  In a confession more than a year ago, van der Sloot said he killed Flores in a fit of rage when she found material relating to Natalee Holloway on his laptop.  It was the five year anniversary of the Mountain Brook teen vanishing after being last seen leaving a bar on Aruba with van der Sloot.

Van der Sloot was wearing a bullet proof vest under a gray blazer in the courtroom.

Although he's confessed to killing Flores there is still a great deal of wrangling over the specific charges and whether he will plead guilty.  The specific charges could change his prison term from a few years to life.

In any case, he still faces a federal wire fraud and extortion charge here in Birmingham over an alleged offer to tell Natalee's family where to find her body.  He was indicted by a federal grand jury after he took money from the Holloways but never delivered credible information.

There is wide speculation he traveled to the poker tournament in Peru where he met Flores with money he got from that information scam.

The local U.S. Attorney's office says Interpol has a detainer order to pick up van der Sloot if he's released from Peruvian custody.
