Lima, Peru (WIAT) - Joran van der Sloot has pleaded guilty to the murder of Stephany Flores and today learned his sentence before a panel of 3 judges. Van der Sloot must serve 28 years . He must pay $75,000 to the family of Stephany Flores. After he is released in 2038, he will be expelled from Peru.
Van der Sloot sat through the lengthy reading of the events of the murder of Stephany Flores and the following investigation. The court decided to take 1 year off the recommended 30 year sentence due to a speedy trial.
Van der Sloot's attorney had hoped that as much as ten years off the sentence due to a "sincere confession". The judges decided that since he initially denied the charges, that his confession was not sincere.
Joran van der Sloot was questioned several times regarding the disappearance of Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway. He has admitted to murdering Stephany Flores on the five year anniversary of the disappearance of Natalee.
