Birmingham, Ala (WIAT) Officially the trial scheduled to start in Lima, Peru on Friday is pretty straight forward...after all a corpse was found in Joran van der Sloot's hotel room and he confessed to killing the young woman.
But if little is straightforward in the van der Sloot saga, it gets even more strange when some of his supporters get involved.
We've told you about Mary Hamer, the American radiologist who considers herself van der Sloot's "guardian angel".
Not content with financial and emotional supprt, the Florida doctor with Alabama ties has come up with an new international crime and claims van der Sloot is the classic victim.
Hamer calls the crime "Humanocide." Writing on the website
Countercurrents.org Hamer defines humanocide as "2 or more People in power who conspire to destroy a targeted person, either mentally &/or physically."
Hamer goes on to a lengthy list of alleged "humanocide" grievances visited upon van der Sloot. Here are just a few.
"III . APPLICATION. JORAN VAN der SLOOT. The evidence shows that 2 or more people in power have committed Humanocide against Joran Van der Sloot, including the Media, private citizens, financial institutions & possible governments.
*MEDIA: For example, A U.S. citizen & a Peruvian translator have slandered Mr. Van der Sloot in the media with the false claim of Psychopath -- that has harmed Joran's reputation. (38) (39). Joran has shown me many examples of empathy for the Flores family & Beth Holloway -- which refutes the claim of psychopath.
*PLEASURE in SUFFERING: One claim made in the media regarding Mr. Van der Sloot is: “I think that what I do take comfort in, his life is a living hell” Taking pleasure in a person's suffering is a feature of Humanocide & Bullying. For the record, I Mary Hamer will never take pleasure or comfort in anyone's life a living hell, including Joran's life. (40)
*BOOK: A book titled: Portrait of a Monster is an example of Name calling that harms Mr. Van der Sloot's dignity, shows him disrespect & hurts his reputation. (41) Sigmund “Freud provided an important insight that we construct monsters … They represent our fears … or they represent our own monstrosity, our capacity for destructive evil intent”. (42) To the authors of Portrait of a Monster I ask you: Have you as Freud says: Constructed a monster based on Your fears, your own monstrosity & your capacity for destructive evil intent?"
Meanwhile, van der Sloot faces a grimmer reality at his trial in Peru. He's facing thirty years in prison for a crime he's confessed to committing.
A year and a half ago the body of an 21 year old student, Stephany Flores, was found in the hotel room of Joran van der Sloot. Hotel security cameras showed them entering the room together...only he came out.
Despite fleeing to neighboring Chile, van der Sloot was arrrested, brought back to Peru and questioned.
Although he's unsuccessfully challenged the admissibility of that subsequent confession, he admitted he killed Flores. He says it was a violent reaction to her prying on his computer and finding material about Natalee Holloway. Police say he killed Flores and robbed her.
Mountain Brook High School grad Natalee Holloway disappeared on a graduation trip to Aruba. She was last seen leaving a bar on the island with local teen Joran van der Sloot.
Van der Sloot was never charged in the case but remains the prime suspect in Natalee's disappearance.
