UPDATE: CBS 42's Stephanie Salvatore reports that Gilley plead guilty to 11 counts, and 11 other counts were dismissed. He is currently on a 24 hour furlough to Birmingham due to a family matter, but he will be back in Montgomery at 8am Saturday. His attorney David Harrison said that Gilley waived his right to appeal and will "speak truth" at the gambling corruption trial of 11 people on June 6. Gilley says the past few months have been "emotionally devastating".
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Country Crossing developer Ronnie Gilley has pleaded guilty to half of the charges against him in Alabama's gambling corruption case.
Gilley entered a plea to 11 counts Friday in federal court in Montgomery and admitted he worked with indicted Victoryland owner Milton McGregror to offer millions to state legislators to support pro gambling legislation. Gilley admitted to one count of conspiracy, four counts of money laundering and six counts of bribery.
During the plea hearing, Gilley said he was politically naive when he started developing Country Crossing, but soon came across politicians "out for personal gain." He said he became engulfed in the process.
No sentencing date was set.
Gilley is the third person to plead guilty in the gambling probe.
