UPDATE: UAB corrected us on the following sentence: "It appears in the video that the Chinese military is using this address to attack websites belonging to the Falun Gong..." with the following statement from Dale G. Turnbough, Associate Vice President, Office of Public Relations and Marketing: “It is impossible to tell how old the archival footage used in the military technology program is. UAB decommissioned the website in question in 2001. It appears from the Chinese video that the purpose was not to launch an attack from that website, but to block access to it. We are not aware of any attack, current or historical, involving that IP address.” We have changed the text of the story to reflect UAB's statement.BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - International website The Epoch Times recently reported on a Chinese military promotional video that featured six seconds of footage showing China's cyber security team. The ten minute video is meant to show the might and technological prowess of the military- but the six seconds in question featured this string of numbers: 138.26.72.17
That's an IP address- and most interesting, one for dali.chem.uab.edu. The video shows this former UAB address and it appears to be related to the Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has clashed with in Chinese authorities for many years.
Epoch Times contacted UAB, and received the following information:
Network administrators at UAB contacted on Friday took a look at the IP address on their network and said it had not been used since 2010.
One of the technicians also recalled that there had been a Falun Gong practitioner at the university some years ago who held informal Falun Gong meetings on campus. They could not confirm whether that individual used that IP address.
