Whether you live, work, or shop down Highway 280 we all face the same problem. Traffic! Now, local and state governments are driving home a solution.

Hoover and Birmingham mayors listened intently to a possible elevated highway and toll road project. But, it isn't cheap.

There saying its 800 million dollars it's more than everyone in all of Jefferson County can afford, this has to be a state project.

That's why the cities of Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills and Homewood must all agree on the new construction.

"We've been getting mixed information from a lot of our businesses and we've got to sort that out," says Birmingham Mayor William Bell.

Businesses and residents along Highway 280 are Mayor Bell and Petelos's greatest concern.

"I feel like they caused the problem and now they've come up with a solution that they think is a solution, and I think they have a two hour problem that they're turning into a 24 hour nightmare," says Homewood resident Angela Comfort.

However, everyone does agree something has to be done to alleviate 280 traffic headaches.

Survey work continues along 280, but construction will not begin until all four cities agree on the project.

IF????? the people( steering wheel holders )part time..... would operate their automobile ???lay the cell phones, lunches, books, maps and makeup aside and drive their vehicles the congestion would diminish by a minimum of 50% I have never driven on a 6 lane highway where the majority of the drivers are concentrating on every thing BUT operating their automobiles.. It is mass insanity the drivers are constantly abruptly switching lane with out benefit of a signal,,they don't have enough arms,,, It take a minimum of three arms to hold the wheel, the cell phone to your ear and operate the turn signal lever.. If it wasn't for the grossly out numbered good drivers watching out for the poor drivers no one would get home in the evening. If I were a policeman on 280 , I could write a damn truck load of tickets every single day for blatant disregard for traffic laws..
