BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Wednesday night Ona's Music Room teamed up with the American Red Cross, local bands, and other businesses for a concert and silent auction to benefit disaster victims.
At first they planned to help disaster victims in Japan, but now the proceeds will also help people in Alabama displaced by devastating tornadoes.
"Right here in Alabama we've got more than 150 homes that have been probably destroyed and lots more that have been affected. So obviously we're very busy. We've got lots of volunteers on the ground," said Chris Osborne, American Red Cross.
"When I was growing up our house burned down, so the Red Cross took care of us until my family got on their feet. So I've been there, done that, so I understand what some of the people are going through," said Ona Watson, owner of Ona's Music Room.
"I'm from Hueytown and the F-5 tornado that hit in the 1990's touched a lot of people that I know and that was total devastation," said musician Rich Daviston.
This spring the Red Cross is off to a busy start faced with disasters at home and abroad.
"It certainly is a strain on our manpower and always a strain on our resources, but we always have to do what we can for our neighbors in need," said Chris Osborne.
"The Red Cross will do the things that they normally do and that's take care of people," said Ona Watson.
