A 16-year-old boy is in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office after allegedly killing his mother Sunday evening.
Investigators believe Jamie Lee Wallace shot his mother, 39-year-old Michelle Ann Wallace, on the front porch of her parents home on the 30 block of 3rd Street N.E. in Graysville before fleeing the scene in a stolen coal company truck.
"I've been doing this for 28 years, and I don't ever remember hearing of a story quite like this one," says Lt. Randy Christian with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
Reports indicate the suspect shot his mother twice with a .38 caliber pistol he had apparently stolen from his grandfather earlier in the day. The victim was running toward her parent's house when the suspect shot her. The suspect allegedly tried to shoot at the victim's father when the gun jammed. Wallace then fled the scene.
A short time after the incident, Wallace was apprehended just one block from where the shooting occurred.
His grieving father, Michael Wallace says his son suffers from Bipolar Disorder.
"He's not no Frankenstein that people's making him out to be. Matter of fact, if you were to meet him, everybody says that he was a loving, caring boy. Nobody ever would've thought this would have happened," Wallace said on Monday.
He was away at work at the time of the incident and calls the tragic shooting "inexcusable." Yet, He says he hopes that the judge will show his teenage son mercy by sending him to a mental institution.
Wallace is being held on a total of $138,000 in bonds. His charges include murder, attempted murder, first and second degree theft of property and resisting arrest.
