Stephens: Occupational tax could reopen jail

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Jefferson County commissioners hope this legislative session means more money for the ailing county coiffers.

The commission suggested a reinstatement of the county's occupational tax.

At .45%, it could bring in between 60 and 66 million dollars, enough to fund the Bessemer jail which closed last year due to budget cuts.

"We could open the jail with that. We could restore normal operations. All other counties within the state of Alabama operate on their one cent sales tax," says Commissioner Jimmie Stephens.

The session could last until May.

But Tony Petelos says they won't be able to wait until then to find out if they need to make more cuts to their budget.
