BIRMINGHAM, AL (WIAT)---Spring break is almost here, and for many, that means, a trip to Mexico. But the U.S. State Department has a warning:  If you want to stay alive, stay away.

Since last year, nearly 70 Americans have been killed, caught in the crossfire between Mexico’s drug cartels.

But it's not keeping everyone from avoiding the country. In fact, one travel agents says, it's relatively safe, except for certain areas.

“That sensationalism is an injustice to Mexico and the people of Mexico and also to our travelers. You know, people are just getting comfortable with traveling again and having money to go on vacation,” said Debbie Perkins of Travel Planners, Inc. in Birmingham.

Perkins says there are places you should avoid in Mexico. They include anywhere along the border, as well as, Acapulco.
