MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) - State Senator Scott Beason's testimony triggered a firestorm of emotions over the past week that have Democrats and civil rights activists calling for his resignation.  Up until now, Beason has kept quite, but that changed on Wednesday.

Beason released a statement saying he's anxious to discuss the events surrounding his appearance in a federal corruption trial and the evidence brought forth by prosecutors; however, the Gardendale Republican says he's still under subpoena and subject to give more testimony.  So, it would be inappropriate for him to talk right now.  For the full statement, look below.

Meanwhile, former representative Benjamin Lewis took the stand again on Wednesday as federal prosecutors continue their efforts to prove casino owners, lobbyists and other state lawmakers were involved in a vote buying scheme to promote gambling legislation.

The focus was again on FBI recordings.  Lewis says it was Senator Harri Anne Smith who told him on tape that Country Crossing developer Ron Gilley was "good for the money."

Lewis, who's now a district Judge in Dothan, says Senator Beason told him about a conversation he allegedly had with State Senator Harri Ann Smith in which she told him House members could get $200,000-250,000 for from gambling supporters if they supported legislation.  Smith calls the testimony, "absurd."

Statement of Senator Scott Beason

"There is great interest in the ongoing public corruption trial taking place in Montgomery. I am very anxious to discuss some of the details of the case, including my testimony, and answer questions regarding the Federal Court proceedings.  However, I am still under subpoena and subject to giving additional testimony. It would not be appropriate or serve the ends of justice for me to comment  publicly until the trial is over. I look forward to discussing the case at that time.

I know this is very difficult and taxing on all the parties involved, including the defendants, the witnesses, the lawyers, the Judge and the jury. It is equally difficult for their families. My prayer for all of them is God's peace and that a true verdict is rendered."
