For the last three days 413 students have not been allowed to step through the doors of Greene County High School.
Yellow tape blocks the entrances and Eutaw's Assistant Police Chief Luther Davis is searching for the arsonist who has the answer to a puzzling question.
"The whole thing is under investigation as to why the fire alarm didn't sound."
It was a neighbor who spotted smoke coming from the school which is why the building is still standing.
That neighbors 911 call came early enough that the fire damage was contained to one classroom on the rear of the building.
But there was still smoke damage in the hallways and other classrooms but that damage has been cleaned up and the system is confident classes will resume in that building next week.
Meanwhile, school has gone on as scheduled this week, by holding classes in other buildings on the high school's campus.
Superintendent Isaac Atkins says the most important thing is that no class time has been lost.
"We want our parents to and the community to know that we're just that serious about the education of our children. And we will do whatever it takes whether we are within that building or whether we have to make other adjustments."
Greene County High will move ahead with homecoming festivities next week as scheduled.
