VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WIAT) - The City of Vestavia Hills hopes new technology will save them up to $25,000 this coming year.

Police officers in the city are now filling their police cruisers with propane. The city recently converted 14 of it's police cars to run off the gas. It's about a buck cheaper a gallon than traditional unleaded.

The city's police chief says that's not the only benefit.

"It's not only had no negative impact on the vehicles but in most instances the car preforms better, has a little more pep to them. Especially on a cold start they seem to handle these hills a lot better," Vestavia Hills Police Chief Dan Rary said.

The Vestavia Hills Police Department is the first in the state to convert and it didn't cost them a cent. It was all paid through a federal grant.
