Local law enforcement is calling it "disturbing!" An undercover tape made by a college student raises some questions about what goes on at Planned Parenthood of Alabama.
20 year old UCLA student Lila Rose goes undercover to Planned Parenthood of Alabama in Birmingham to make an appointment to have an abortion. She recorded the visit as she talks to the counselor identified as Tanisha. Rose tells the counselor that she's 14 years old and that her boyfriend is 31.
Rose asks, "Is it a problem about my boyfriend?"
Tanisha responds, "As long as you consented to having sex with him..there is nothing we can truly do about that."
Randy Christian of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office heard the tape today.
"Anyone who sees that should be disturbed by it, and I hope they're disturbed by it. For a 31 year old to have sex with a 14 year old, that is rape in the second degree. I think they are not only morally obligated to report it - the law requires them to report it, and there could be some serious consequences otherwise," says Christian.
Alabama Law also requires written consent from a parent or guardian before an abortion can be performed on a minor.
When Rose insists that her parents can't find out, the counselor asks if she has a sister over the age of 18.
Rose responds, "I have a half-brother who is 18."
"Does he have the same last name as you?" asks Tanisha.
"No," says Rose.
"He has to have the same last name," Tanisha replies.
Finally, the counselor suggests Rose contact the Health Center Manager.
Tanisha adds, "I know sometimes she does bend the rules a little bit."
