You don't need a corporate sponsor or a pit crew to take off on Talladega Superspeedway today, just a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and 35 dollars to donate for a good cause. A Corvette club called Vettes for Vets took care of the rest.

"We had a car show last year in Hoover and that turned out really well, this year I wanted to do something a little bit different," Jeff Williams.

More than 190 sports cars lined up to rev their engines on a real NASCAR race track including the six-liter, eight-cylinder, chrome-coated monster carrying me. Watching from the stands is one thing, but the view from the track looks a whole lot different.

The drivers left with their pictures and the memories of a lifetime, but the proceeds went to the Alabama Gold Star Families. "It's an organization of families that have lost someone in military action, and we're trying to raise money out here for a memorial to be built near the new national cemetery in Montevallo," said Chairperson Marynell Winslow.

Winslow said the memorial will be dedicated to all the Alabamians killed in the War on Terror.

It will cost about thirty-one thousand dollars to construct, but Winslow said the six-thousand raised by the Talladega fundraiser put them two thirds of the way to their goal.
