HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) - Socializing seniors have been proven to be healthier and happier down the road ... studies show it is as important as exercise and diet.
A group of senior pageant contestants are serving as role models for the sixty and over set.
Six Ms. Senior Cullman County contestants will proudly showcase their talents and life philosophy for staying young at heart this weekend.
Part of their message is that staying active gives seniors a sense of purpose ... giving them more energy and increased independence.
These women face challenges just like everyone else, Juanita Crocker says she recently had two metal rods put in her legs, however, her family including twenty great grandchildren will watch her walk across the stage for the upcoming pageant.
Annette Bates is visually impaired but says this is just part of having fun in her sixties. Her twin sister Jannette also decided to join in.
The pageant is scheduled for Saturday, February 4th from 2-4pm at Wallace State College, Betty Leeth Haynes Theatre which is located in the student center.
Experts say seniors with a more social lifestyle will continue doing routine activities almost twice as long as those who are not active ... It also helps delay memory loss
The AARP has plenty of suggestions for seniors to feel happier and healthier ... Including adopting an animal companion, listen to music, laugh, walking outside, volunteer, and try tai chi.
