BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) – Mother nature didn't spare many communities on April 27th. Including, Ohatchee, in Calhoun County, now a mission group from Tennessee has their sights set on the future, building two homes, in just two weeks! The sounds of reconstruction ring out at the Haltiwangeer family's plot of land. The family evacuated to safety on April 27th in fear of what was coming.
Mandy Haltiwangeer says, “When we came back we came back to nothing there was nothing here, and it's not just my home it was my sister's and my parents.”
All the land, destroyed. Leaving nothing behind. “I have three kids and what do I do? I have to give them some security and it was hard, because I felt hopeless,” Haltiwangeer tells us.
Mandy and her family thought all hope was lost when their prayers were answered in the form of a preacher from Tennessee.
Steve Freeman, Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Springfield Tennessee says, "Two in two weeks, I knew once the cleanup was through I knew there were going to be some folks who needed help getting back in their homes. So we prayed through and The Lord, well, He put us here to these two home owners."
Call it Divine Intervention. More than 100 people, all volunteers, are rolling up their sleeves for “Operation James 2:22.”
They're putting scripture into action.
Mike Laborg, the lead contractor says, "We just felt like we needed to come down here, if we can go to foreign countries and help people we can come to Alabama and help because they're our neighbors."
Neighbors helping neighbors rebuild. “Operation James 2:22” rolls out of town Friday, leaving Mandy and her family eternally grateful.
Pastor Freeman says his church has 400 members. 200 people in the congregation are helping with “Operation James 2:22.”
