Floating debris and water up to the calf of your legs...this is what some people in Brighton face after every rainy day. Neighbors say they've pleaded with the city for help, for years but to no avail.
Many neighbors on St. Julian Street are fed up with constant flooding problems. They believe Brighton's Mayor, Angelo Hinkle, has turned his back on them. Horace Toney has resided in Brighton for 67 years and says, "I was one of your campaign managers to help elect you in this office, and you haven't did anything to help the people in Brighton! And we are tired of what you're doing! If you don't want to help us get out of the seat!"
After three mayors and years of promises, residents say they've seen little results. Ethel Belle has been in her house for 50 years and says they don't know what to do next. She says, "They fixed the one house there and they never completed it. And every time it rains we almost got to go to shelters cause water be up to our steps."
Neighbors say they have to put on rain gear and boots just to check the mail on rainy days. Darrhyl Harris says, "Once it go down, it just don't go away, it ain't got nowhere to go because all the drains are stopped up. It just sits there two to three weeks." Which makes for a breeding ground for mosquitoes during the summer...add that with trash floating in...equals what neighbors call a mess!
