The Alabama Birth Coalition had a fundraiser Saturday. More than 100 met at Rojo restaurant on
Highland Avenue to eat breakfast and go for a walk. The group was trying to raise 55 thousand dollars to bring legislation to
Montgomery that will make it legal for midwifes to work in
Alabama. Besides raising funds the group also wanted to change peoples perception about what midwives do.
“The myth is just that out of hospital birth is not safe when actually if you do research evidence shows that’s never been the case,” says Susan Petrus with the Alabama Birth Coalition.
“We just want to give women options in this state. Right now our only legal option is to birth in a hospital with an obstetrician. It’s legal for women to give birth at home but its not legal for them to have a trained care provider to attend them,” says Jennifer Crook Moore a certified midwife.
Midwives train from three to five years.
