If you are pregnant in Alabama the only birth option you have is in a hospital. That’s why the Alabama birth Coalition is trying to change a law that makes it illegal for you to have your baby at home with a midwife. For Leanne Pearce Reed she had to travel with her husband to Tennessee to deliver her sons Adam and Thomas with a Midwife.

“I was so stressed and startled to realize how few options Alabama families have. I think Alabama families should be able to choose the setting of their birth and the attendant for their birth,” says Reed.

Certified midwifes train anywhere from 3-to-5 years for their license. Jennifer Crook Moore a Tennessee licensed midwife says she has delivered more than 100 babies and knows the service she provides is important.

“I see a woman throughout her pregnancy, provide her prenatal care, attend her during her birth, and all throughout the past partum period,” says Moore.

But not everyone agrees that an at home birth is safe. Doctors recommend that babies are born only in hospitals.

“Even low risk pregnancies can turn to high risk pregnancies in just a few seconds. During the midst of the labor and delivery process so many thing could go wrong. Whether it is fetal distress or something else that would end in a disastrous outcome for either mom or baby,” says Dr Ashley Tamucci and OBGYN with Brookwood Hospital.

Regardless of your belief on this topic the Alabama Birth Coalition wants moms to have the choice that is why they are urging Alabama legislators to change the midwife law. If this is something you are interested in getting involved with there will be a fundraiser Saturday at Rojo restaurant on Highland Avenue. Breakfast starts at 8 and the walk starts at 9:30.

Thanks so much for your coverage on this important event. If it's legal for home births in Alabama, then it only makes sense for Alabama to make it legal for Certified Professional Midwives to assist deliveries. Alabama mothers should have this choice.
