The first women to fly U.S. military planes were honored on Capital Hill today (03/10).

Women Air Force Service Pilots, or WASP, members were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award Congress gives to honor civilians for achievements and contributions to society.

Comprised of more than 1,000 women WASP flew aircraft during World War II on non-combat missions in the U.S. Thirty-eight of the women were killed in service. It's estimated that about 300 of the women are still alive.

Long considered civilians, WASP were only recognized as war veterans in 1977.

Mary Foster, a Northport native, was one of the women to receive the prestigious award today.

So congrats, Ms. Mary Foster.
