Tuesday the Jefferson County Commission unanimously approved a resolution to cut county spending by at least thirty two million dollars.

It requires approval from the personnel board, but commissioners expect it to move forward.
They say it is inevitable without the occupational tax revenue that they can no longer use.

They plan to close all satellite courthouses in the county by mid-August.
Road maintenance will be restricted to unincorporated Jefferson County.
The opening of the Bessemer County Courthouse is now on hold indefinitely.

Another provision will shift more than 3200 county employees to a 32 hour work week.

According to Commissioner Bobby Humphryes, employees that are paid a fixed salary are exempt from this round of cuts because of legal constraints.
Humphryes says around 377 county workers fall in that category, including the five commissioners. He says the county attorney and commissioners are exploring options to make the cuts more even across the board.
