Some local charity bingo halls are back open for business following a Monday ruling in Jefferson County Circuit Court.
Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Robert Vance's ruling says that Alabama Attorney General Troy King has authority over the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling.
The decision may give bingo halls in the Bessemer Cutoff the confidence to reopening for at least a few months until a Bessemer circuit judge makes a ruling.
A bingo facility in Lipscomb off Bessemer Superhighway had their open sign lit up until around four o'clock today. A manager said several big operations in Fairfield, Lipscomb, and Bessemer may reopen Friday.
Bessemer District Attorney Arthur Green said he had heard the same thing.
Green said that Judge Vance's ruling will have a big impact on every county with a bingo ordinance. Until the State Attorney General's office gives his local office more direction, Green said he's not sure what his next move will be.
Across Jefferson County in Tarrant another charity bingo business was also open Monday. A managing partner said many vendors may be reluctant to help other operations reopen until there is clarity about the law.
"I just think they should legalize bingo because it brings good jobs to the city and it also keeps people employed," said Tarrant resident Jelani Hogan.
