For the residents of Etowah County the arrest of Senator Larry Means comes as a shock, after all, he's served the people here since 1976. Means first served as a City Councilor, then Mayor of Attalla and for the past 12 years, as a State Senator.
"I’ve known Larry for years and years. I just can't believe that," says Norma-Jean Fortenberry, a resident of Etowah County.
"I was shocked I didn't believe it," says Pete Rary, a resident of Etowah County.
Means is charged with one count of conspiracy, two counts of federal program bribery, two counts of attempted extortion and 11 counts of honest service mail and wire fraud.
"It’s putting everyone in the northern and west coast looking at us thinking we are weird having all this corruption going on underneath us," says DeeAnna Fulenwider, an Etowah County resident.
"I just think they are all a bunch of crooks. I don’t have any confidence in any Senator," says Deborah Ledbetter, an Etowah County resident.
While a number of people say they will no longer support Larry Means for Senator the majority of people we spoke to say they are going to continue to believe he's innocent until the day he is proven guilty.
"Larry Means is a very good friend of ours and ill support him to the very end," says Connie Champion, an Etowah County resident.
"I’m going to continue to support him because he's a good man," says Rary.
"My prayers and stuff go out for the family," says Joana Thompson an Etowah County resident.
