"Make sure that when you're out there on that boat that you're out there not drinking, because alcohol is actually one of the largest contributors to fatal accidents with boats. We found in the state of Alabama there's 270,000 registered owners and with this being Labor Day weekend, you know they're out on the water," said John Saddler, Allstate Insurance.
Transporting the boat can also be dangerous. So it's very important to check your hitches before hitting the road or the boat ramp.
“Make sure your boat is securely fastened to your automobile or whatever vehicle you are pulling it. Because a lot of accidents occur where boats lose the grip off of that hitch or you make a wrong turn," said Saddler.
Training is another way to reduce your risk and your insurance rates.
"One of the things you definitely want to try to do is get as much education out there on the water through a U.S. Coast Guard training institute or some other type of water safety prevention course," said Saddler.
John Saddler says insurance companies actually give discounts to customers who complete approved water safety courses.
