MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) - Senator Scott Beason is the key player in the governments case and was the man who contacted the FBI about the alleged corruption and vote buying. He is the guy who wore a wire in the state house and he also recorded phone conversations for the government.
Beason testified the whole ordeal got started after being invited to dinner by Harri Anne Smith and when he arrived, Milton McGregor, Ronnie Gilley and several country music stars were also there.
Beason testified that the dinner was different than most, Gilley got very aggressive in trying to attain support for electornic bingo. After that dinner Beason testified that Senator Harri Anne Smith told him the gambling interest could provide a half million dollars to his campaign if he were going to run for state office.
Beason testified this transaction made him very uncomfortable, but his uneasiness about the situation grew when he felt threatened by Jarrod Massey, a lobbyist for McGregor.
Beason testified it was those interactions that led him to contact the FBI.
It was after contacting the FBI that Beason began wearing the wire to work and recording phone conversations that caught several people in a vote buying, conspiracy and corruption case.
