BIRMINGHAM, AL (WIAT) --- The Jefferson County Commission has cut the Cooperative Library System's budget by 77 percent over the past two years, causing them to begin fundraising to make up for money lost.

The Library Cooperative's delivery service transports four-million books between branches every year, but the trucks could stop suddenly if the money isn't there.

"It's the worst case scenario and that's hopefully down the road a year we think we can make it through this year- we're just hoping.  And we're looking at that right now, we're even looking at our mid year budget, so, we're in emergency budget mode and have been really for more than a year," says the cooperative's director Pat Ryan.

The cooperative also provides internet access at each library.  And several research databases could also be on the chopping block if enough money isn't raised.  You can donate money online at www.jclc.org, or in person at your local library.  You can also mail a check made payable to JCLC to JCLC, 2100 Park Place, Birmingham, AL 35202.  All contributions are 100 % tax deductable.
