Birmingham, Ala (WIAT) Is Joran van der Sloot pushing back against an American doctor who has been paying his legal bills and visiting him in prison? Mary Hamer is an M.D., a radiologist who once practiced here in Alabama and is now based in Florida.
We told you last month how she's been footing van der Sloot's legal bills in a murder case in Peru. Van der Sloot is the confessed killer of Stephany Flores. He's still prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway.
The two young women are linked by their involvement with van der Sloot. Natalee disappeared on a graduation trip to Aruba...last seen leaving an Oranjestad bar with van der Sloot.
Stephany's corpse was found in van der Sloot's Lima hotel room....five years to the day Natalee vanished.
So where does Hamer fit in? She's widely proclaimed her devotion to van der Sloot and his cause saying he's the victim of a conspiracy. She's been sending care packages and money for more than a year. Recently she's visited him at Peru's notorious Castro Castro prison.
But Newsweek says van der Sloot may be getting tired of the attention....reporting that he wanted her to back off.
So...benefactor and guardian angel as the Dutch media have called her?
Loopy cougar whose attention is increasingly unwanted?
Just one more woman fallen for the stereotype "bad boy?"
Dr Hamer told Newsweek: 'I have a very strong feeling about protecting. It’s a very deep natural instinct of mine that is driving me - not driving me, but allowing me the freedom - to help Joran.'
