Help For Teachers With High Cost of School Supplies

JASPER, Ala. (WIAT) - Legislators are considering a proposal to help pay for back-to-school supplies for teachers ... an expense many teachers pay for out of their own pocket.

The proposal would give an additional 300 dollars for teachers to buy supplies. If passed, the money would go to every classroom in public schools from Kindergarten to 12th grade.

One teacher we spoke with in Jasper says even hitting every back-to-school sale out there, she spends up to 700 dollars out of her own pocket for school supplies each year.  She adds that a first year teacher will typically spend up to two-thousand dollars on supplies since they are starting from scratch.
