How did Major Bashinksy die? It’s the disturbing question at the center of a case stuck between two police agencies that could ultimately determine how this investigation will proceed.
And as we draw closer to finding out what happened to the Mountain Brook tax attorney....we're getting more information on the case itself.
As of today, neither department---Mountain Brook or Birmingham---says it's in charge of the case. That’s because both are in limbo, waiting on the coroner.
They’re waiting to find out the cause of death.
Last night CBS42 found out that Bashinksy's brother Sloan has been blogging about the case, saying that police found a gun at the lake.
But today, when asked about the gun, Captain Henry Irby with the Birmingham Police Department declined to comment on specifics. Irby said investigators did find an "object" and that it is being used as evidence. But, he wouldn't confirm that the object was, in fact, a gun.
"It’s very important for no one really to jump to conclusions. Everyone has a theory as to what happened. If for some reason, foul play has been determined, then we need to keep all of our information to ourselves and let the people who know something about the case to come forward and tell us what they do know,” said Irby.
Now Birmingham police say they are doing some "behind-the-scenes” work until the cause of death is released, but they wouldn't specify on what that is.
Also, the coroner is expected to release the cause of death as early as Monday. Make sure to stay tuned to CBS42 for any new developments.
