EUTAW, AL (WIAT-TV) - Governor Bob Riley's anti-gambling task force raided GreeneTrack last July. Since then, the only bingo going on there was the old fashioned kind, paper sheets and ink blotters. That will change Friday at noon.
Thursday afternoon, GreeneTrack president Luther Winn announced he's bringing e-bingo back to Greene County. Only this time it's a little different. Winn is using what has been described as "table-top" bingo machines. In a press release he says the machines "have been tested and certified as legal electronic bingo machines and cannot be construed as slot machines even under the broad test announced by Attorney General Luther Strange."
When he learned about GreeneTrack's plans, Strange sent out his response via e-mail, "We have previously met with attorneys from GreeneTrack, and they are aware of the state's legal position against slot machines and the Supreme Court of Alabama's definition of the game of bingo. This issue will be handled like any other law enforcement matter."
But the news of electronic bingo returning is big news for many in the community. One man describes the facility as the economic foundation of Greene County as a whole.
